Shelterbox Challenge
>> Stage 2
Lake District

ShelterBox is a charity based in Cornwall that delivers boxes of survival equipment to people displaced by natural and other disasters anywhere in the world. Each ShelterBox contains essential equipment that aids survival in the days and weeks that follow a disaster. The speed at which help reaches victims is crucial.

The ShelterBox Challenge Series is designed to give participants a taste of the challenges commonly faced by the SRT’s when on deployment, as they work to get the boxes to the people who need them.  It also helps participants to understand the value of the contents of a ShelterBox when it’s all they have to provide shelter, warmth and hope.

Location

The Lake District is a staggeringly beautiful place; The National Park is England's largest and covers 2292 square kilometres (885 square miles). It is famous for its stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and cultural heritage. The lakes and tarns give the Lake District a quality of scenery and recreational resource found nowhere else in England.

All the land in England higher than three thousand feet above sea level lies within the Lake District National Park, it also contains Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England. it is a genuine wilderness area and offers huge potential for adventure and inspiration. In order not to put this sensitive landscape under undue pressure we limit the number of places, so to avoid disappointment please book early.

Terrain

The higher fells are rocky, with lower fells being open moorland, notable for its wide bracken and heather coverage. Below the tree line, native oak woodlands sit alongside nineteenth century pine plantations. Much of the land is often boggy, due to the high rainfall. The terrain that each team will have to tackle along with their ShelterBox will include rivers, woodland, moorland, fells, bogs and steep ascents and descents and granite tors.
