30/06/06 Due to an injury a place has become available on this years supported Norseman trip. Please contact us on 01548853524 for all the details. This is a great and very rare opportunity to take on this epic challenge, if you are adventurous and feeling fit, call us.
Overview

As endurance challenges go, the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon (www.nxtri.com) has developed a well earned reputation as one of the classics of its genre.  It is generally accepted to be the most difficult Ironman of its kind in the world.  It is not just experienced triathletes who find the prospect of this challenge irresistible, it seems to appeal to a wide variety of adventurous souls who are looking for something just that little bit different.

Due to the linear nature of the Norseman course, each participant requires support from a mobile team.  This vehicle based support is mandatory, and for athletes travelling from overseas, getting this organised can present a challenge all of its own.

To help overcome this hurdle Endurancelife offers a unique support service for the adventurous athlete that not only guarantees a place in the event, but takes care of many of the less glamorous aspects of competing in a logistically complex event overseas, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying the challenge.

Please have a look at the video clip from the 2007 trip Norseman 07

Support Service

Our Background..

In 2007 we successfully supported 8 athletes to the finish, in 2008 it was 15 and everyone earnt a black T-Shirt.  In 2009 we supported 18 athletes from the UK, USA, Israel, Norway and Singapore and managed 10 black T's and 7 white. All the trips have been excellent experiences and we have received outstanding feed back from both our customers and the Norseman management team on all 3 occasions.

The Event..

The Norseman course takes in some of the most spectacular and challenging terrain in Norway.  For many it is the linear nature of the route that makes it so attractive; from the fabled beauty of the Hardangerfjord, to the traverse of Europe's largest mountain plateau, the Hardangervidda, to the infamous final marathon stage that terminates on the summit of the highest peak in the Telemark region, Gaustatoppen (1850m) it really is an amazing journey from start to finish.

Taking on the Norseman is a special experience, not just for the challenge it represents, but also for the remarkably beautiful place you travel to and the genuine warmth and enthusiasm of the Norwegian hosts. This combined with the special camaraderie between the participants and support crews make this truly a trip of a life time.

What's Included..

Our support service is perfect for those who either do not have the budget to organise their own in country support, or simply like the idea of being part of a special group supported by an experienced team.  It is less expensive, more efficient, better for the environment, more interesting and much more fun to travel with a group of like minded people, supported by an enthusiastic team who have either competed in the Norseman themselves, or have been part of the support teams in 2007, 2008 or 2009.

The support package includes;

  • 4 day trip
  • Guaranteed entry into the NXTRI
  • In country pick ups and transfers (to / from designated airport)
  • Main meals
  • Accommodation
  • Dedicated support before, during, and after the race from an experienced team
  • Special Team T-Shirt

The support package does not include;

  • Flights to Norway
  • Travel Insurance
Itinerary

The 2010 Norseman starts at 5am on the 7th of August. Our trip is based on participants arriving in Norway on Thursday 5th and leaving on Monday the 9th, this provides just the right amount of time before and after the event to get organized, relax a little and enjoy the surroundings.

On arrival in Norway you will be greeted by the Endurancelife crew who will take care of everything from here on.   First off is the beautiful drive to Eidfjord which takes between 4 and 5 hours, including a lunch stop.  The journey to the start is a great introduction to the scenery and terrain to be expected during the event.

We will have two nights accommodation organized near Eidfjord, it is a beautiful place and very relaxing, there will be opportunities to stroll around the village, go for a kayak on the lake or just kick back by the fjord.  There will also be ample time to get your bike and kit organized in preparation for the race.

On Friday morning we will spend some timing organising transition boxes and tweeking bikes if required, after this there will be the opportunity to go for a short spin on the bikes before lunch.  After lunch there is time to relax before the special Norseman welcome gathering at the main tri camp in the afternoon.

In the evening before dinner we will all get together and go through the plan of action for race day, get all of the kit and equipment ready to go and settle down for a few hours rest.

Race Day: We will provide full support to you during the event from pre determined strategically positioned points along the route.  We will see you through transition at T1, provide you with food and drink during the ride, organise your T2 gear then meet you at the mountain checkpoint and prepare you for the final push to the summit.

Once it is all over, we take you to the mountain hotel. There will be food available for those who want it; otherwise you can go for a well earned hot shower and rest.  All accommodation here will be pre-booked for you.  In the morning there will be an excellent slap up breakfast and if the weather is good you can sit out on the balcony and enjoy a stunning a view of the mountain you climbed only the night before.

At 11am on Sunday morning, all the support teams and competitors assemble for the official presentation of finisher T shirts.  This is always an excellent occasion and a fitting way to finish off the Norseman experience.  Sunday afternoon is spent traveling to our final lodgings and on Sunday night there is the opportunity to go out and celebrate.

After a final breakfast, the remainder of the morning and afternoon are available for sight seeing.

Feedback

The 2009 support trip to Norway was a big success.  Endurancelife supported 18 athletes from 5 different countries and we achieved 10 black finishers & 7 white and importantly everyone also managed to have a great time.

Here is some feed back from previous trips.

Hi guys

Wanted to drop you a line to say a big thank you to you all for your organisational efforts and your support on the Norseman trip.  It was obvious how much effort had gone into planning the trip for our benefit and it made for a brilliant experience.

An experience like that is so much more than just the taking part in the actual event, it’s the planning, the training, the anticipation, the travel, the culture, the chance to meet like minded people, the atmosphere, the competition and then of course the post event chat and social – all of which were maximised as a result of your efforts.

It was a great break from the daily routine, a brilliant event and a short holiday all rolled into one and will be something that I will remember for a long time, so thank you to you all.

Hi all.

I had a memorable experience in Norway, due in no small part to the efforts of all the Endurancelife team.

I was initially pretty disappointed in my performance but having read Paul's report on tri247 on Friday it was clear that others had to fight really hard to get the black t-shirt so I should be happy that for me, it was in comparison reasonably comfortable time.

I thought the Endurancelife support was incredibly professional and I felt 100% comfortable at all time that you guys were looking after us. Couldn't ask for more. As for next year, I'm undecided at the moment. Maybe another Norseman, maybe something else - a few things are taking my fancy at the moment. Can you put me on any email distribution list for 2010 as if I do it again it will definitely be with Endurancelife.

Dear Endurancelife

Lorain and I had the BEST time and every time I look at my 2 new Norseman tattoos or have a brew from my "best bloke ever" mug I remember our fantastic 5 days with Endurancelife.

I will definitely be doing the Norseman in 2011 and Lorain maybe as well but we are not sure yet. I am coming back for black.

Lorain and I can't think of any ideas that could make the trip better. We think the whole crew made for a great team with a really friendly yet professional attitude.

Hopefully we will see you soon and we wish you the best of luck for the rest of your season

Cheers Terry

Dear team

Sorry it's taken so long but I would just like to take a minute and thank you all for an absolutely fantastic time in Norway.

I had a wonderful time, both competing in the Norseman and also in Norway itself, and a lot of that was due to the organisation of the trip as a whole. It was great to know that all of the details that can be stressful on a trip abroad were taken care of, from hire cars to accommodation to food and drink and the like, and that I could just get on with preparing for the race. If I needed anything it was great to know that you guys would only be too willing to help.

The organisation throughout the trip was fantastic and it was very uplifting seeing the Endurancelife flags at different checkpoints, aid stations and transition zones throughout the race as I really felt there was a team out there supporting me. I bet a fair few triathletes wish they were part of our group when they saw them! It looked really professional.

Special mention must go to James, who supported me throughout the marathon leg – he was absolutely great, and it was great to see him every couple of km – it was a real pschycological boost, and he helped keep me going.

I'm not sure if I'll do the event again next year (and beat Ross and Chris!) Or whether I will come out and help you guys with the supporting side of things, but rest assured I'll will thoroughly recommend you guys when anyone asks.

You guys are real unsung heroes and deserve a lot of praise.

Thanks very much!

Safety: As the name states, the NXTRI is an extreme event. The course is Iron man distance and has been specifically designed to provide the greatest possible challenge. The weather is unpredictable and the temperature of the fjord not always consistent. The race is very demanding, both physically and mentally. Well planned and rigorous preparation is crucial, as is a positive mental attitude. It is each participant’s responsibility to ensure they have considered the demands the event will make of them and to prepare accordingly. The section cut off times were reduced for safety reasons in 09 making the event even more challenging than previously.

Endurancelife accepts no responsibility for changes made to the event by the race organisers.

For all the official rules and course information please visit www.nxtri.com

  • All personal Triathlon equipment to be supplied by the participant.
  • No travel insurance is included, personal trip / sports goods insurance is recommended.
  • Whilst every effort will be made to prevent damage to personal equipment whilst in transit, the organisers accept no responsibility for the condition of personal equipment left in their care.
  • Every effort will be made to give each athlete the maximum chance of completing the course to the best of their ability, however, due to the extreme nature of the challenge & the logistical complexities of the supporting role, it is essential that all participants make them selves aware of the level & nature of the support that can be provided and set their expectations accordingly.
  • The organisers reserve the right the change the published details of the trip at anytime.
Facts
  • The swim is 3.8km (2.4 miles), the cycle is 180km (112 miles) and the run is 42 km (26 miles).
  • The total height gain over the whole course is over 16,000ft, or 5,000 meters. That's more than the equivalent of cycling and running to the top of Mont Blanc from sea level.
  •  The finish (on the summit of the highest mountain in Telemark) is at 1,850 meters, Ben Nevis is only 1,344 meters!
  •  The record winning time is 10 hrs, 30 minutes and 9 seconds (10:30:09).
  •  The slowest finishing time is 21 hrs, 12 minutes and 24 seconds (21:12:24)
  •  The fjord is over 400 meters deep and can be between 12 and 20 degrees centigrade.
  • The first climb on the bike course is over 20 miles long & takes competitors an average of 2 hours to complete.
  • In 2005 only 1 person was fast enough to reach the summit. The rest were all diverted to a different finish line because of a blizzard!
  • Until the 2007 event only 23 Black finisher t-shirts had been handed out to Brits, after the 2007 race this increased to 46.
FAQs

Q: Do I have to have done a triathlon before to take part in the Norseman?

A: Amazingly, for the majority of the team we took to Norway in 2007 it was the 1st triathlon of any description any of them had ever done!  Whist it would undoubtedly be useful to have taken part in a triathlon previously, but it has been shown time and time again that having not done so is no barrier to finishing an Iron man.  It is much more important to train hard and to be confident in your ability to keep going when things get tough.  A positive mental attitude is as important as your physical condition.

Q: Are there many bike shops close to the start?

A: No, and even if there were the price of bike spares and imported goods is staggering, we will have comprehensive tool kits and spares with us and will be able to fix anything.

Q: Is the fjord cold?

A: The temperature can range between 14 & 20 degrees centigrade.  It depends on the Spring & Summer weather, it is likely to be warmer than you might think, if the summer has been good the water becomes very balmy, having said that in 07 the organizers had to move the start to a patch of water warm enough to permit the race to start!  Unless you are used to Mediterranean luxury, taking the plunge shouldn't be too much of a shock.

Q: Is Norway really that expensive?

A: Yes. Even the simplest things hit the wallet hard. Food especially mounts up quickly. Absolutely make sure that your bike is in good working order. The cost of getting it fixed out there is horrendous.

Q: What is the atmosphere like?

A: The atmosphere and camaraderie are one of the reasons this event is so enjoyable. The Norwegians are excellent hosts and there is a real buzz around the whole weekend. This starts with the Eidfjord mini-triathlon the day before.

Q: How will we spend the day before the race?

A: In the past we have taken a dip in the fjord, gone kayaking, taken the bikes for a spin up the first part of the course and watched the mini-triathlon. It is up to you, we will get together to discuss the race day logistics at some point, but if you want to spend the day simply relaxing and asking us questions that is fine.

Q: How many women enter the race?

A: In 2006, 8 women started and 8 collected a black finishers T shirt. Until 2007 no British women had competed in the race.  We are proud to have helped Sharon Daw from Cornwall to become the 1st British lady to finish the race and earn a black t shirt with an incredible come back after a tough swim leg.  In 07 a total of 13 women took part, all of them earning a black t shirt.

What a perfect day Saturday was. Sometimes everything is just right with a run and Saturday was one of my all time favorite days in my entire 35 years on this planet. The perfect weather (I like it cold and dry for running), the awe strikingly beautiful and varied surroundings; I mean sand dunes, beach, muddy single-track, wood, hills and bog land all in one run, and it was just happening on Saturday. There was a buzz in the air, people were talking to each other, people were happy.
