The Route
For UTSW 2013, runners in the 100 mile category will begin their journey in the picturesque fishing port of Polruan on the South coast of Cornwall. From Polruan you will head east on the South West Coast Path to the to the quaint fishing town of Looe. Here you will leave the South West Coast Path and head inland following the Smugglers' Way*(1). You will travel through wooded valleys and ancient oak forest and pass tiny Cornish villages that appear lost in time - eventually emerging at the shore of Dozmary Pool, the lake which is reputed to be the final resting place of King Arthur's Excaliber!
Continuing north, you will come to the Jamaica Inn made world famous by Daphne du Maurier's smugglers' tale of the same name. Here you commit yourself to Bodmin Moor, and any beasts that may lie therein! The route makes a bee line for "Brown Willy" the highest point in Cornwall, famous for its foggy weather and wild winds.
This intriguing cross-county trek comes to an end at Boscastle on the North Cornwall coast which among other things is home to the Museum of Witchcraft. From here you head west along the South West Coast Path to Tintagel the birth place of King Arthur. At Rock it's inland a few miles to cross the river at Wadebridge, and then following the estuary via the Camel trail back to the coast. The final 20 miles from Padstow to Watergate Bay are punctuated intermittently by stunning sandy bays and rugged cliffs including the Bedruthan Steps.
For the second year in a row, Watergate Bay Hotel plays host to the finish with hot soup and a very warm welcome awaits all finishers.
*(1)The Smugglers' Way: The Smugglers' Way is an inland route through the heart of Cornwall linking the harbours of Boscastle on the Atlantic Coast and Looe on the English Channel. The Way traverses the rugged and picturesque landscape of Bodmin Moor via Brown Willy (The highest point in Cornwall), it visits the world-famous Jamaica Inn, and follows scenic paths beside the rivers Valency, Fowey and West Looe. This route is literally drenched in mystery, intrigue and history.
