Coastal Trail Series
>> Stage 2

Portland

Fast, furious, fun and fascinating! The terrain is COMPARATIVELY easy, but what it lacks in difficulty it more than makes up for with variety and interest. This is the ideal first event for those new to trail racing!

"The whole event was 'spot on' in my books! I will definitely be encouraging others to have a go as it was such a great experience in a truly spectacular landscape. Not for the faint hearted though as it was bloody tough!" Tom Hillier

Introduction

The Isle of Portland in Dorset is home to the second event in the Endurancelife Coastal Trail Running Series, and the course is the fastest of the five. The event takes place on the 26th January 2007 and is open to runners of all abilities over the age of 16. There are three distance categories; 10K, Marathon and Half Marathon. With several age categories and many spot prizes every competitor has the possibility of claiming their share of the £1000 prize pool. If you aren’t one of the lucky prize winners, you always have a cool event Tshirt, finishers medal and a great experience to take home with you.

In order not to put the cliff paths under undue pressure we limit the number of places to 500, so to avoid disappointment please book early.

Please Note: Unlike the other four courses in the Coastal Trail Series, the Portland Marathon course is two laps of the half marathon course.

Terrain

Portland is a place of contrast and calamity - an unforgettable landscape where nature appears to be waging a constant battle with humanity. Basically the island is just a big beautiful lump of limestone jutting out into the sea off the Dorset coast. For millennia ferocious seas have pounded against it while humans have quarried it, built prisons on it (and from it), and exploded bombs on it! The beautiful Isle of Portland feels ravaged and abused, but all this drama serves to makes it a hugely interesting place to run.

The island is now scarred with the remains of ancient quarries, and littered with huge stone slabs and the odd Stone-Henge-style rock arch. At the Southernmost tip of the Island is the Portland Bill Lighthouse which warns those at sea away from its rocky and inhospitable shores. The cliff paths are exposed in places but generally they are wide and safe and the ground is even and firm.
