Introduction

The Endurancelife Coastal Trail Series is a unique trail running event that runs from October 2007 until April 2008.  The series comprises of 5 stunning locations all located along the rugged coastline of the South West of England and Wales.  At each atmospheric location there is a 10k, Half Marathon and Marathon course; each are wild and diverse, and are as inspiring as they are challenging.

Most of the courses pass through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB's), National Parks, or Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's) and as such we are privileged to be able to use them.  In order not to put these sensitive landscapes under undue pressure we limit the number of places to suitable levels - this only adds to the atmosphere of these tough but intimate events which are usually based near or from atmospheric pubs in quirky villages.

Whether you’re 16 or 60, a newcomer or an old-hand, the Series offers something new and challenging for everyone.  With 5 spectacular courses, 3 distance categories, and a massive £6000 worth of awesome kit up for grabs, this is definitely a series to get stuck into.  Several age categories and many spot prizes mean that every competitor has the possibility of claiming their share of the prize pool.   If you aren’t one of the lucky prize winners, you always have a cool event T-shirt, finishers' medal and a great experience to take home with you.

Courses and Dates

All of the courses in the Endurancelife Coastal Marathon & Half Marathon Trail Running Series have been carefully chosen to showcase the very best of the South West. The five stage series represents a varied and interesting cross-section of landscapes and terrains. Each of the courses are unique in its own way and presents different challenges to the aspiring trail athlete, but what they all have in common is an abundance of natural beauty, breathtaking scenery and rewarding experiences.

Pembrokeshire
Stage 1
24.11.07
More Details

Wild and rambling with undulating terrain, and spectacular views. The exposure and closeness to nature is so uplifting that despite the difficulty of this challenging course you can’t help smiling as you run.

Portland
26.01.08
Stage 2
More Details

Fast, furious, fun and fascinating! The terrain is COMPARATIVELY easy, but what it lacks in difficulty it more than makes up for with variety and interest. This is the ideal first event for those new to trail racing!

South Devon
23.02.08
Stage3
More Details

Simultaneously Picturesque and Punishing. Remote and rural, jagged, and jaw droppingly beautiful, but be prepared to hurt! In Trail Running terms this is “as good as it gets”. Definitely not to be missed!

Cornwall
15.03.08
Stage 4
More Details

Rugged, rocky, bleak and beautiful. On top of all the usual coastal drama, this course treats you to a good helping of mysticism; ancient stone circles and lay lines abound making this course as magical as it is monstrous!

Exmoor
12.04.08
Stage 5
More Details

Diverse, exaggerated and extreme. The super sized topology of this course makes it arguably the most challenging of the 5 in the series and definitely a grueling test of endurance even for the very hardest of trail runners.

Training and Advice

Despite being standard marathon, half marathon and 10k distances, it is important to realise that the nature of these coastal courses make them considerably tougher than a road event of the same distance.

The multi terrain courses are often undulating involving some steep narrow climbs and descents. These can put added strain on muscles and joints, less common in road running.  The trails pass over varied ground: rock, mud, shingle, grass and stone, which can make the going under foot tricky and unstable.  The coastal location of the courses means the weather can be very changeable and can add an extra dimension of difficulty to the event.  Exposed coastal paths certainly feel the brunt of strong winds and heavy rain.

Here is some advice and a few training tips that can help you prepare:-

1) Use correct footwear:  Trail running trainers are most suitable for the coastal series.  Road running trainers will not give the necessary support and grip for trail running.  After purchasing a pair, it is recommended that you wear them in before the event to avoid possible problems with blisters and discomfort. All the team here at Endurancelife use the trail running shoe: Active Trail Mesh from LaFuma.

2) Try to train off road: Try and use footpaths and bridal ways as often as possible whilst training.  This will allow you to become more accustomed to running over varied ground. Initially don’t try and cover the same distance off road as you might on road.  Off road running requires more energy usage and is slower going.  Build up your strength and stamina by increasing the distance gradually.

3) Don’t Avoid Hills: Although not particularly enjoyable, don’t avoid taking on hills and steep sections of ground, especially whilst off road.  As with building up your distance training, apply the same principle to climbing and descending.  Increase the number and severity of climbs/descents gradually as you become stronger and more confident.  This exercise will help strengthen your joints and reduce the possibility of injury.  The added exertion of climbing and descending will build up calf and thigh muscles respectively.

4) Use multi-storey car parks: If you struggle to find off road trails, ie, if you live in a city, try training in parks.  If hills are hard to come by, then try running up and down multi storey car parks (in the evening preferably, when there are fewer cars), or climbing/descending the stairwells of high raised buildings. If you do enough repetitions this will provide a good exercise for climbing and descending.

5) Walk steep uphill sections: Remember, during an event there will usually be sections of the course which are so steep or tough that running will not be possible or merely uneconomical on energy expenditure.  Don’t worry about having to walk some parts.  You can accommodate better for this by training beforehand, and you should not lose too much time on the race day.  Find a suitably steep section of ground and practice walking up it briskly, without stopping.  Again, the more you do it, the easier it will become.

6) Train whatever the weather!  A warm sitting room may be more appealing but avoiding training due to bad weather will no doubt disrupt your training program.  This will also prepare you for the possibility of running in bad weather during the event, and allow you to work out what kind of clothing/ kit is best  in such conditions.

7) Stay Hydrated: Make sure you keep fluid and energy levels well maintained whilst training.  This will prepare you well for the event and get you into good habits.  The nature of the event means that you will expend a considerable amount of energy over a prolonged period running and possibly become dehydrated.  Although there are water stations approximately every 6 miles on the courses, you must run with a bottle or hydration pack.

Well done for organising such a great event. Lots of water stations, a brilliant course that was well marked and a hot meal afterwards. Use of the hoses made getting home less smelly than it could have been and plenty of loos so no queuing either before or after. All these little things add up, especially the hot meal. I usually feel a bit wan after a half marathon but felt much better yesterday thanks to the  ‘proper’ refuelling immediately afterwards. So well done for the attention to detail – so glad I did this event instead of the Bideford half next weekend – much more fun!!
Best regards Nicola Davies
Just wanted to say that i had a cracking time on my first trail run, enjoyed every moment of it and cant wait for portland and the remaining trail runs. iam now a converted trail runner and realise i have been pounding the streets far to long. see you all soon. Wayne Bray
Many thanks for staging yesterday's race.  Much better weather than last year too, well organised!  I had a good time even though my legs were a good bit heavier than last year on the day.  The course is a joy to run, although it's very hard.  Last year it was excellent final prep for the Grizzly but sadly this year that'll not happen for a while.  If I'd known about the Grizzly postponement earlier I'd have loved to have done the full marathon route - maybe next year.  One year I'll tackle your Coast to Coast too. Well done all and my thanks to all your enthusiastic marshals. Simon Romaine
Hello. Great event yesterday for the coastal half marathon. Bit achy in the legs but otherwise no worse for wear! Really well organized and the chilli was spot on.  Jonathan Scott
Hi. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone at Endurancelife for a brilliant event.
Great organisation, fantastic scenery and excellent course markers. I had a grand day out and am looking forward to my next Endurancelife event.  Oh and the flapjacks were great. Edward
Dear all. I ran in the coastal half marathon today.  It was the first time I have entered any event of this kind and I very much enjoyed it.  I found it well organised and friendly so thank you very much.  Keep up the good work! Best wishes, Chris Bearblock
Hi, Thanks for a great day on Saturday, unfortunately I had to pull out at about 21 miles with a jarred back, but I will be certainly back for more next time!! Kevin
Well done for organizing a superb and immensely challenging Devon coastal marathon. It was a true epic of a race. It was memorably harder than others such as the Clarendon Off Road Marathon. From the stunning coastal scenes to the relentless hills to the delightful footpaths – all contributed to a great vista. What made the race even better was the camaraderie amongst the runners, for example, hanging back a second or two to keep the gate open, or the shared moments (wistful glances at people drinking cool beer), the odd snippet of conversation as you passed people by (or they you) – none of which got in the way of competing hard. None of this would have been possible had it not been for the time and effort to set up the route, aid stations, food etc, all of which meant one could focus on racing hard. I really enjoyed it. Thanks a lot.  Dom Irvine
Thanks for the organisation of the Coastal Marathon last weekend. I enjoyed it very much! I wrote about the Coastal Marathon on my weblog: http://blijlopers.volkskrantblog.nl and on the Dutch & Belgium Ultra- and Marathonrunners website www.ultraned.org a short story about the race.
Just wanted to say thanks and well done once again to you and your merry band for a great event on Saturday. As an ex rugby player I am new to this whole endurance malarkey, but I have to say that I'm hooked! My first event was last years Coast to Coast, and training for, and participating in it opened up a whole new world for me! So when I saw the Coastal half marathon advertised I had to go for it - what an amazing course -I particularly enjoyed the approach and going over the ridge at Start Point - and it was nice to reach Prawle in the daylight this time! I like the whole "trail" aspect of the events you do and appreciate the views 100% - after all if you are going to stare at a point on the horizon and hammer it until you get there you may as well be on a treadmill in a gym eh? By the way - don't let anybody tell you that the course is not a PB course. It was my first ever half marathon race and I got round in 2:24:03, therefore setting a PB! :)
I thought that the Sportident dibbers were an excellent idea, and worked really well - particularly impressed with the personal printout and speed at which the results appeared on the (also impressive) new-look website.
Can't go without mentioning my mate David "don't let me go off too fast" Bettinson, who, as a strictly road-based (apart from the swimming, obviously) triathlete from mountainous Cambrige, was chuffed to nuts to win the half marathon, as this kind of event represented an unknown quantity to him and he came through in that almost indecent time. Our only regret was that we had to shoot off soon afterwards. Thanks and well done on a well organised event,  Andy Trudgill.
Just thought i would send a quick email to say thanks for organising such a great event on Saturday.  The course was excellent  , very tough and very muddy !!  Even though it took me 6 hours to get round  it was great fun I will definitely enter another endurancelife event soon
Kind Regards Kevin Smith
I just wanted to say thank you very much for a great day on Saturday at the Coastal Half Marathon.  I'd never done an event like this before and I thought it was great organisation and good fun to do. I've signed up already for two more events.  See you then All the best   Patrick Brockman
Hi Guys, Great race at the weekend (although having done some training may have helped!). But I loved it and the cannon to start us off was a nice touch.
Just thought I would drop you a very quick note. Having completed my very first Endurancelife coastal half marathon, and now finally just managing to walk about, I wanted to say a very big THANK YOU to you and your team for what was a marvellous day. The organisation was superb to say the least!!!  My first experience of this type of run was beyond anything I could have imagined, with everyone so friendly even offering encouragement to all around them en-route. This was my first and I can assure you certainly won’t be my last. Again HUGE thanks to you all a very memorable and enjoyable occasion  Regards and best wishes, Kevin Webster 150th over the line!
Well done on a great event - really enjoyed it.  Great course, well marshaled and all well organised. Only comment was can you avoid chilli next year - it was way too hot.
Thanks for a great race on Saturday Gary - brilliantly organised and a great atmosphere!
Regards. Matt
Gary, Back home, a day after the hardest race of my running life. There is very little that doesn't ache, but this is surpassed with the wonderful memories of the scenery and the experience of running in the marathon. The day was well organised and the friendly marshals and support staff made the journey much easier. I also wish to mention the pre-race e-mails which were re-assuring and informative.  A big thank you to you and all your team.
I may be back next year or for a different challenge....once I have forgotten about running for five and a half hours, the aches and pains, and the shouts of "not another bloody hill" have been erased from my mind - maybe it will be easier next time?!! All the best, Dave Cowell
Please thank your team for organising a fantastic marathon Saturday, the scenery was amazing and the coast trails were fantastic!
Just wanted to say "thanks" for organising the marathon. I wouldn't have necessarily have said this on the last drag along  Slapton Sands and over the final headland, but basking in the  reflected glory of finishing and surviving it was a truly awesome and  memorable event. Not sure it was the best choice for my first marathon, but a mere 26 miles on flat tarmac will seem like a walk in the park now I imagine! The whole day seemed to run very smoothly, was really well organised, and the marshalling and signposting was spot-on!  Malcolm Hilton
Just a quick note to say what a great day we had at the coastal marathon on Saturday. The course was challenging but varied and absolutely beautiful.  The organisation was first class throughout and this combined with the welcome from you and your team and the friendliness of everyone involved made it a really special event.  I would also like to say how impressed I was with the Evoke system for reviewing and purchasing race photos. I therefore sincerely thank you and your whole team for a memorable day.  Kind regards, Tim.
The Coastal half marathon was a great event last weekend. I really enjoyed it and thought it was really well organized, and everyone was very helpful, friendly and most of all non-pretentious. The route was beautiful but very tough (harder than the Grizzly!)
My only complaint was the lack of jelly babies at the water stations! I stupidly set off without my gels, and so after 1hr 30 mins I was crying out for a sugar boost! So just a tip for next year maybe… that aside the end of race food was perfect!  Many thanks for a great event; I look forward to doing more Endurance life events in the next few months and even maybe heading north to do some more in Wales and Scotland.  All the best Catherine Powrie
Just wanted to say thanks for organizing the coastal half marathon a couple of weeks ago.  What a great setting and what a brutal course.  My legs were shot after 30 minutes so the last part was really tough.  I couldn’t walk properly for two days after.  The drinks stations, course marking and base at Beesands were excellent and well done on organizing the good weather. David
