Introduction

Endurancelife has
teamed up with RBS in a quest to find the most dynamic business teams in the South West. Much like business, adventure racing requires strategy, determination, teamwork, daring and the ability to perform under pressure.

The RBS Adventure Quest takes adventure racing into the corporate arena with a new and exciting one day format in which teams of three race against each other, and the clock, in a multi-disciplined adrenalin fuelled challenge. A variety of maps and cryptic clues are used to guide the teams as they run, scramble, mountain bike, kayak, coasteer and navigate their way between hidden checkpoints.

If you think that your team has what it takes to succeed then call us now to reserve your place in the quest to be " Best in the South West". Places are limited to a maximum of 40 teams so act early or risk missing out.

The RBS Adventure Quest takes place on Thursday the 22nd May at the Flete Estate in South Devon. The event is designed to be extreme fun for all levels from newcomers to elite adventure racers. Entry is only open to corporate teams from businesses based in the South West.

The Venue

The Flete Estate is a privately owned 5,000 acre Estate in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with large broadleaf woodlands, rolling pastures, cliff paths, three beaches, little hamlets and a tantalising network of tracks and pathways. Meandering its way straight through the centre of the estate is the beautiful and totaly unspoilt Erme Estuary. The estuary is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and also the perfect setting for the RBS Adventure Quest. See Map

Disciplines

Kayaking:  Endurancelife supplies all the kayaking kit and equipment you will need to complete the RBS Adventure Quest.  We have a large fleet of excellent sit on top kayaks which are very user friendly, unsinkable and suited to paddlers of all experience levels.  Solo participants use single kayaks, teams of two use doubles.  It is possible to take part in the event with no prior kayaking experience providing you are physically fit, and can swim confidently; we do however recommend that some prior experience is sought.  The Paddle section may involve up to 5 miles and takes place on a tidal estuary.

Foot Travel: You can run or walk the key is to select suitable footwear and travel at whatever pace is best for your team. you will be on your feet for around 3 hours as you swap between the bike, kayak and your feet; the key is to set a consistent pace that will see you through to the end of the race, as a team.

Mountain Biking: Your bike needs to be robust, not flash. And although we dictate that it must be a mountain bike, there are a number of different road surfaces you will encounter. For technical single-track junkies, there should be some challenging riding sections and for those that don't fancy the berms and bumps, some chicken runs. You will be on green lanes mostly. (If you don't have your own mountain bike we can rent you one from our fleet - by prior arrangement).

Navigation: This is the backbone of the RBS Adventure Quest; the ability to move as a team with map in hand. We use a number of differing styles of mapping and this can prove interesting for even the most seasoned of orienteers. Whilst the navigation underpins the whole Race, it is not designed to catch people out and does not prevent participants with more basic navigation skills from competing or completing the course.

Coasteering: Part scrambling, part swimming this thrilling activity allows you to reach otherwise inaccessible parts of the coast. Routes traverse around the base of cliffs and through sea caves. You will require your own wetsuit for this, but we will provide you with a personal flotation device (PFD) and helmet.

What is involved?

  • Teams of three (mixed male and female where possible)
  • Bike, Kayak, Run, Coasteer and Navigate
  • 50 km (Maximim) coastal adventure course
  • Testing your skills and teamwork to the limit
  • Event goody bags, prizes and trophies
  • Beach BBQ

What Actually Happens

The course is kept secret until the day itself. The event starts at 10:00 on Thursday morning, where competitors embark on at least 6 hours of adventure. The race is geared to all ability levels and while it's both physically and mentally challenging, the emphasis is still on fun!

The concept of adventure racing is fairly simple; participants are given a map and a list of checkpoint grid references or clues. They are then given 6 hours to solve the clues and navigate their way to as many checkpoints as they can. Each checkpoint has a different number of points assigned to it dependant on how hard it is to locate. Checkpoints can be reached by whichever mode of transport is deemed most suitable – this is where good forward planning and strategy comes in.

Each participant has a small electronic stick or “dibber” which they wear affixed to their wrist. When they find the checkpoint all they need do is insert the dibber into a hole on the checkpoint box to prove they have been there and collect their points. Once they return to the “Race Base” this information can be downloaded and their score calculated. Teams that go over the 6 hour time limit have points deducted for each minute they are late. Once all the teams are in the scores can be calculated and the team with the highest score wins.

Sport Ident

SPORTident, is the electronic system used to time and score The RBS Adventure Quest. At registration, each competitor will be given an electronic "dibber" and a tamper-proof wristband which will be attached loosely to your wrist with the tip of the dibber pointing towards your fingers.

At most checkpoint locations during the race, each team-member must dip their dibber to ensure that all members of the team have visited the checkpoint. At the finish it is critical that the last team member across the line also dips their dibber.

After you have finished the course we do a final "card-dipping" and provide you with a printout showing the list of checkpoints in order visited and time of punching, as well as the start, finish and elapse time.
